The Historic Hermosa Hotel has been serving guests of the island as far back as 1896 and, as was the style then, our rooms are small and simple. No fancy amenities, but some of our rooms now have air conditioning and heat (B+ cottages) and all but our E-type rooms have cable TV. We continue to offer clean rooms at Avalon’s best prices, allowing people who budget carefully to enjoy all the fun that Catalina Island has to offer. Please note that our historic property does not have an elevator and most of our rooms have some number of stairs to climb. The Hermosa Hotel property has two main areas; the Catalina Cottages, which include our family units, and the historic hotel building; both areas and room type are explained below.

Quaint, charming studio apartment-style cottages adjacent to our hotel building that each have private bath, cable TV and the following options:

A Cottage

These are in our adorable cottages area, each with private bathroom. A complete kitchen (sink, refrigerator, stove/oven, coffee maker and all the utensils, etc) with a small sitting area allows the option of preparing meals at “home” to save on the cost of eating out - perfect for families!

B+ Cottage

Out on the third floor landing of our hotel building, these cottages were recently renovated to include tiled showers, mini-fridges and microwaves. The rooms have flat-screen TVs and AC/heat, but please note that our historic building does not have elevators so these are up some stairs.

B Cottage

Also in our adorable cottages area, these are a basic version of our A cottages without the kitchen, for guests who don’t plan on cooking and want affordable lodging less than a block from the beach.

C “Family Unit”

The perfect way to accommodate the whole family or your group of friends. Family units have complete kitchen (sink, refrigerator, stove/oven, coffee maker, microwave and all the utensils, etc) with a small sitting area, private bathroom and cable TV. Some have small balconies and private bedrooms, while others are a larger version of a cottage with more beds. Each has three or more beds and can accommodate groups of up to six or eight persons. Popular with families and group celebrations, these typically book quickly so advance reservations are strongly encouraged.

B-type Room
The first rooms in our historic hotel building to have private bathrooms, these are comparable to our B Cottages described above.

D-type Room

An affordable way to enjoy all there is to do on Catalina Island without spending a bundle on a room you may hardly be in during your vacation. Located on the second and third floors of our building (remember, no elevators), these rooms have bed (or beds), furniture, TV, sink and mirror in the room and a bathroom that adjoins with your immediate next door neighbor. When you enter your bathroom to use the toilet and shower, there is a door to your immediate neighbor’s room except that they keep it locked from inside their room for privacy, as do you. Often referred to as a “Jack and Jill” or “European-style” shared bath, you and your immediate neighbor lock each other out of the bathroom while in use. These are perfect low-cost rooms for divers, student travelers, or groups that choose to reserve both rooms to adjoin via the shared bath.

E-type Room

Our most simple and economical option for the true budgeter. Located on the third floor, these rooms include the bed (or beds), furniture, sink and mirror - no TV or toilet/shower are in these rooms. Guests utilize locked toilet/shower facilities on the second and third floors. Budget travelers enjoy these rooms as a clean, friendly place to rest their heads while enjoying the island’s many activities.
